StockMarketEye v2.7.0 Released

Posted on Friday, Jan. 21st 2011 No Comments »

We are proud to announce the release of StockMarketEye v2.7.0 for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux.

This release adds 2 powerful, often requested features: Portfolio value charts and comparison charting.

Portfolio value charts allow you to view the historical values of your portfolio in StockMarketEye’s chart area. Simply click on the “Total” line in the portfolio or, in the Portfolio Totals view, click on the portfolio’s line to view the chart. The chart is computed on the fly from the transactions recorded for the portfolio, so it can take a few seconds to load the first time you view the chart.

If you have been using StockMarketEye since before v2.6.0 (December 2, 2010), you will be required to synchronise your current portfolio with the transactions that have been recorded for this portfolio. StockMarketEye will walk you through the synchronisation process the first time you want to view the Portfolio’s chart. You’ll find a longer explanation of what the synchronisation is all about on our Portfolio Synchronization Guide page.

The other major feature of this release is comparison charting. You can now add any index or stock to the chart area to compare with the currently displayed chart. This even works with the new portfolio charting feature so you can compare the performance of your portfolio with that of an index or other stock.

You can add a comparison index from the chart area’s “Chart Options -> Compare to…” menu. A set of pre-selected indexes is available, but you can add any symbol you want by typing it into the “Comparison Symbol” field. When you have a comparison index or stock in the chart, the price axis (y-axis) values are shown in percentages. Any comparison symbols you add will stay in the chart until you click the small, red X to the right of it in the chart.

Below is a complete list of the additions and changes in this version of StockMarketEye.

What’s New In StockMarketEye v2.7.0

New Features

  • Portfolio charting! View the end-of-day market values of your portfolios in the chart area. Note that synchronisation may be required.
  • Comparison charting! Add an index or stock (or any chartable symbol) to the chart to compare with the currently visible chart.
  • Preferences: Separate formatting is now available for a Portfolio’s “Shares” column. It can be configured with 0 – 4 decimal places.
  • Preferences: Percentage and currency symbols are now optional.
  • New column: “Volume % Ave 3M” which will display today’s volume as a percentage of the average 3 month daily volume (from the “Volume Ave 3M” column).
  • New Portfolio Transactions column: “Cash Affected” which displays whether the proceeds of this transaction were added/deducted from the Portfolio’s cash balance.

Changes

  • Improved split handling.
  • Improved historical FX charts.
  • “Previous Close” column renamed to “Close”
  • Portfolio’s total buy value removed from “Buy Price” column in Total line. Please use “Buy Value” column instead.
  • Closing the application is now much faster when many Watchlists and Portfolios are present.
  • Exporting a Portfolio’s Transactions with import compatible formatting adds 4 new columns: Exchange Rate, Currency, Cash Affected and Name.
  • Importing a Portfolio from a CSV Transactions file now also supports the same additional 4 columns. See the documentation in the User’s Guide for the details.

Bug Fixes

  • Stability improvements for the update and restart process.
  • Linux startup script permissions are now correctly set after upgrade.

There is no charge for this upgrade so we highly recommend that all users (trial and licensed) upgrade to the newest version.

StockMarketEye v2.6.0 Released

Posted on Thursday, Dec. 2nd 2010 No Comments »

We are proud to announce the release of StockMarketEye v2.6.0 for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux.

This release brings the long awaited “Stock Alerts” feature. You can now set alerts on certain values in both Watchlists and Portfolios. For example, you can set StockMarketEye to alert you when a stock passes a certain price. Or if a stock is up/down more than a certain percentage in one day. The supported alert values (columns) are: Last Price, Volume, Today’s Percent Change, P/E, Position % Gain/Loss, Position Gain/Loss, Watch % Change, Watch Points.

When one of the alerts is raised, StockMarketEye will display a special indicator next to the item and in the folders list. If you have Growl or Growl for Windows installed, StockMarketEye will also send a notification that gets displayed on your desktop. Growl notifications can even be forwarded to your iPhone using Growl add-on applications. Now, StockMarketEye makes it that much easier to keep your eye on the markets.

Other interesting new features in this release include a new column for Portfolios that shows you the percentage of the portfolio represented by the item, and a pre-set option for exporting a Portfolio to CSV in a format that can be imported back into StockMarketEye without changes.

One other important change in this version is an internal upgrade to the StockMarketEye database. You’ll notice this change the first time you run the new version of StockMarketEye when a small window will be displayed while StockMarketEye automatically upgrades. This change brings stability and speed improvements.

    • Notification of alerts raised also pushed to Growl for Mac or Growl for Windows.
  • New Portfolio column: “Portfolio %” which will display the percentage of the total portfolio value represented by this item. This is useful when analysing your current portfolio allocation vs your investment strategy.
  • New Portfolio column: “Buy Val Yield” which will display the dividend yield on the purchase value of the Portfolio item.
  • New Portfolio Totals column: “Cash” which will display the Portfolio’s cash holdings (from the “MarketVal” column of the Portfolio’s Cash line).

The review was mostly favorable and fair, although we do wish they’d used version 2.5 rather than version 2.4 for the review.

StockMarketEye v2.5.1 Released

Posted on Tuesday, Sep. 14th 2010 No Comments »

We are proud to announce the release of StockMarketEye v2.5.1 for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. This release fixes the problem with the symbol ^DJI (Dow Jones Industrial Average) and adds a couple of useful new features.

The symbol, ^DJI (Dow Jones), stopped working about a week ago. We learned that this is due to a contractual obligation between our data provider, Yahoo! Finance and the Dow Jones Index. (See here for more details.) With this release the ^DJI should be back to working again in StockMarketEye.

We have also enhanced the charts with keyboard shortcuts as well as the ability to display the chart in a separate window allowing to you view multiple charts at the same time. The keyboard shortcuts are CTRL-1 to CTRL-9 (on Mac OS X it’s CMD-1 to CMD-9). Opening a separate chart window can be done via the new icon in the chart toolbar.

Also with this release comes the ability to change the number of decimal places shown in the Watchlists and Portfolios lists. You’ll find this setting in the Preferences window, under the “Visuals” tab.

Below is a complete list of the additions and changes in this version of StockMarketEye.

What’s New In StockMarketEye v2.5.0

New Features

  • Open a chart in a separate window. See the new button in the Chart toolbar area.
  • Change the date range shown in a chart window using keyboard shortcuts: CTRL-1 = 4W; CTRL-2 = 3M; etc (Mac OS X: CMD-1 = 4W; CMD-2 = 3M, etc).

Changes

  • Allow for configuring the number of decimal places displayed. See the new “Visuals” tab in the Preferences window.
  • Rearrangement of popup menus to make it harder to accidentally delete a portfolio or watchlist.

Bug Fixes

  • Fix for ^DJI quotes.
  • Fix for Market Cap column values.

Upgrading to version 2.5.0 for Windows Users

Posted on Wednesday, Sep. 1st 2010 No Comments »

Upgrading to StockMarketEye version 2.5.0 on Windows requires a few extra steps so we thought we’d outline them here and give a little explanation.

First Uninstall, Then Install

Short Description: The upgrade process is:

  1. Uninstall the old version of StockMarketEye
  2. Install the new version

If you see this window, StockMarketEye has found that an old version is still installed on your computer. In order to proceed with the installation of the new version of StockMarketEye, you will have to uninstall the previous version first.

Important #1: Uninstalling the previous version of StockMarketEye will not remove your data. All portfolios and watchlists that you had before will be available after.

Important #2: Make sure that you have quit StockMarketEye, before starting to uninstall it.

You can find uninstallation instructions here or click on the “OK” button in the window to open them in your browser.

Some users have reported that even after uninstalling, StockMarketEye will tell them that they still have a previous version installed. If this happens to you, look in your C:\Program Files folder to see if a StockMarketEye folder is still there. If this folder is still there, you should delete it (#3 in image below).

Once the StockMarketEye folder in C:\Program Files is gone, you can start the installation of the new version of StockMarketEye.

Why Do We Need To Uninstall First?

We know that upgrading to new versions of StockMarketEye has been difficult for some users. We also want all of your users to run the latest-and-greatest version of StockMarketEye so they can take advantage of all the new features.

So we have simplified the upgrade process for future versions of StockMarketEye. When the next version of StockMarketEye is released, you will only need to click 1 button. StockMarketEye will download and install the new version for you without any intervention on your part. However, in order for this new upgrade process to work, the old version of StockMarketEye needs to be manually uninstalled.

Basically, we decided to make the upgrade process a bit more difficult this time, in order to make the process much simpler in the future.

If you have any questions or problems with the upgrade, don’t hesitate to contact our support team. We’d be happy to help work you through the upgrade process.

StockMarketEye v2.5.0 Released

Posted on Tuesday, Aug. 31st 2010 No Comments »

We are proud to announce the release of StockMarketEye v2.5.0 for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux. This release brings major new features that enhance your productivity when using StockMarketEye.

The most notable improvement in this version is the improved look of the interface (smaller dragable area separators; clearer row separation in tables) and the new StockMarketEye logo.

StockMarketEye

The New StockMarketEye Logo

Next, we’ve added support for importing via CSV files. You can import Watchlists or Portfolio data now using CSV files. Have a look in our User’s Guide for details on the format of the import files.

We have also added support for exporting the historical price data from the Chart into a CSV file. The chart export function can be accessed from the chart toolbar, just to the right of the “Chart Options” menu. The export will be made for the current date range in the Chart (4W, 6M, 2Y, etc). You have the option of exporting just the adjusted closing prices or full Open-Hi-Low-Close data as well as the option of including the values from the currently visible Technical Indicators.

One other major improvement in this version is a streamlined update process for future releases. You won’t see this in action until the next release of StockMarketEye, however. When that happens, StockMarketEye will handle the download and installation of the new version. You will no longer have to download and install yourself.

We have also made a number of enhancements to existing features including allowing Watchlist and Portfolio symbols to be edited. Also StockMarketEye now displays an indicator in a cell when the value of that cell has been overridden by hand and is not showing the value downloaded from the web.

Finally, we have reduced the size of the backup files created by StockMarketEye by almost 90%. We recommend that you make regular backups of your StockMarketEye data using the menu, File -> Back Up… (Note: the Backup/Restore feature is not available in the trial version.)

Below is a complete list of the additions and changes in this version of StockMarketEye.

What’s New In StockMarketEye v2.5.0

New Features

  • New StockMarketEye logo.
  • Import Portfolios from CSV files.
  • Import Watchlists from CSV files.
  • Export historical price data from the Charts, including Technical Indicator values.
  • Streamlined version updating (activated in next release).

Changes

  • Improved look with clearer dragable separators between components.
  • Improved reading clarity in tables (notably with alternating line color on Mac).
  • Cells that contain a user entered value (overriding the automatic value) are displayed with an asterisk.
  • New “Dividend Value” column in Portfolio Totals view.
  • Backup files are now up-to 90% smaller.
  • Advanced setting for Pring to PDF function to allow specialized text in place of StockMarketEye.
  • Edit the symbols of items already in a Watchlist.
  • Edit the symbols of items already in a Portfolio, including the symbols in the Transactions view.

Bug Fixes

  • Save Portfolio Totals columns order and size on close.
  • Bug fix for Day Total calculation and stocks requiring a currency multiplier (UK stocks notably).

There is no charge for this upgrade so we highly recommend that all users (trial and licensed) download and install this new version.

StockMarketEye Reviewed on CNET

Posted on Tuesday, Jul. 27th 2010 1 Comment »

The Editors at CNET have written a review of StockMarketEye, giving it 5 out of 5 Stars!

Here’s an excerpt from the review:

StockMarketEye’s simple dialog-based interface is one of the clearest, cleanest displays of securities market data we’ve seen.

And this quote from their conclusion sums it up well:

This is not only one of the cleanest-looking but also one of the easiest stock trackers we’ve used … We recommend it.

Here’s the link to the full review.

We can’t say we were surprised by the 5-Star rating (of course :-) ), but we are proud that someone like CNET finally came out and said it.
