Use Portfolios to track the performance of your investments

This page will show you how to use Portfolios in StockMarketEye to track the performance of your investments.



Creating A New Portfolio

Add your own portfolios to track the performance of your investments.

In the main menu, select File -> New Portfolio.... This will open the following window:

Type a name for your new Portfolio in the field labeled Name. The name you use can be anything you want, but every Portfolio must be named differently. You may also add a description of your Porfolio in the Description field, but this is optional.

Click "OK" to save your new Portfolio. Your StockMarketEye window will now look similar to the following:

You can modify the name of a Portfolio by double-clicking on its name in the list on the left. This will display the "Portfolio Settings" window where you can change the Name and Description of your Portfolio.



Adding Stocks To Your Portfolio

Your portfolios can contain short or long investments in stocks, mutual funds and ETFs.

If you know the symbol of the stock, mutual fund or ETF that you want to add to your portfolio, simply click on the "Buy Stock" button (green plus sign) in the Portfolio toolbar. This will open the window titled Buy or short-sell a stock.

If you don't know the symbol of the stock, mutual fund or ETF that you want to add to your portfolio, you can search for it by typing the investment's name into the search box in the upper right corner of the StockMarketEye window.

If the search results don't have what you are looking for, try being more specific. For example, instead of trying "Vanguard", try "Vanguard 500".

Double-click one of the search results to start adding it to your Portfolio. This will open the window titled Buy or short-sell a stock.

This window allows you to specify the details of the stock you are adding to the Portfolio.

If the "Symbol" field is not already filled-in, enter your stock, mutual fund or ETF symbol here. Then fill in the other fields of the dialog with values corresponding to this investment.

  • Trade Type: Select either "Buy" if you are buying this asset or "Sell Short" if you are short selling it.
  • Number of Shares: Enter the number of shares you are purchasing.
  • Buy Price: Enter the price paid per share. You can use the current market price or enter a specific price by unchecking "Use current market price?" and then entering the price paid in the "Price" field.
  • Date Added: Select the day you bought this asset.
  • Transaction Costs: Enter the amount this transaction cost you with your broker (sometimes refered to as "commissions").
  • Cash Balance: Check the box for "Update the cash balance?" if you want the total cost of this asset subtracted from the Portfolio's cash balance. See the section "Cash Management" below for more details.
  • Comments: Add any comments or notes about this asset in this field.

Once you have filled in appropriate values for the fields, click on the OK button to add the asset to your Portfolio. Your portfolio will then look something like this:

Modifying And Removing A Stock From Your Portfolio

You can modify a holding in your portfolio by selecting it and then clicking on the "Details" button in the toolbar.

You can also simply double-click on the stock in the Portfolio to open window titled "Details of a stock in your Portfolio" dialog.

From this window, you can modify the details of the asset in your Portfolio such as Number of Shares, Date Added to the portfolio or Buy Price per share. When you have finished modifying the details of this asset, click the "Ok" button to update the asset in the portfolio.

Modify Assets In-line

It is also possible to modify the "Shares" and the "Buy Price" in-line, by selecting the asset in your Portfolio, then clicking on the selected "Shares" or "Buy Price" column. To complete the modification, press return. To cancel, press Esc.

You can also modify the "Last" column in this way in order to visualize the effects of a different asset price on the investment's value.

Remove An Asset

You can remove an asset from your portfolio by selecting it and then clicking on the "Sell Stock" button in the Portfolio toolbar.

Removing an asset brings opens the window titled "Sell a stock or cover a short position".

This window lets you specify the details of the transaction. When you have completed the details of the transaction, click the "Ok" button and the asset will be removed from the portfolio.



Advanced Portfolio Features

Some of the more advanced features of StockMarketEye Portfolios are described below.

Default Transaction Costs

When you buy or sell an asset in your portfolio, a transaction cost is recorded. You can set the default value for the Transaction Costs field from the "Portfolio Settings" window. To open the "Portfolio Settings" window, select the portfolio then select Portfolio -> Settings... from the main menu. Click on the "Portfolio" tab to view and modify the default transaction costs for this portfolio.

The transaction costs can always be modified on a per-transaction basis by modifying the value in the Transaction Costs field when you buy or sell a stock.



Cash Management

Buying or selling an asset can also automatically modify the Portfolio's cash balance. Select the Update the cash balance? item in the windows titled "Buy or short-sell a stock" and "Sell a stock or cover a short postion" if you wish the value of the asset (less transaction costs) to be added or subtraced to the portfolio.

The "Portfolio Settings" dialog, under the "Portfolio" tab, allows you to change the default selection for this item.

You can modify the Portfolio's "Cash" balance by clicking it, entering the new balance and pressing Return.

Changing the Portfolio's Currency

Portfolio's "Cash" balance and "Total" value are by default shown in US dollars. You can us a different currency from the "Portfolio Settings" dialog, "Currency" tab.

Simply select the currency in which to display the value and click "Ok".
